Cranston, R.I., --Beverly Restivo of North Kingstown has been named Big Sister of the Year 2010 by Big Sisters of RI. Beverly was chosen from nearly 200 women from around the state who are currently serving as Big Sister mentors to RI’s at-risk girls.

Beverly has been a Big Sister to her Little Sister, Alyse since June 25, 2003. At that time Alyse was 11 years old. Alyse’s mother states “If it had not been for Bev, I don’t know where my daughter would be. We were going through very rough times and I am grateful Bev was there for her and managed to help my daughter come out of her shell.”

Beverly’s Little Sister says “I don’t know where my life would be if she was not there to keep me from falling.” If you knew of my life before, you would know how much she has made a difference.” Big Sister of the Year Beverly Restivo is a former teacher having taught in all 3 Warwick high schools, Warwick Vets, Toll Gate and Pilgrim until her retirement in 2002. Beverly says the best thing about being a Big Sister is the fun she’s had and the inspiration she’s gotten from seeing the changes in her Little Sister over the years.

About 80 people were on hand as the Big Sister of the Year award was presented to Beverly on Saturday evening, June 26th. She received a special gift from Swarovski. The awards ceremony took place on the 7th floor of the GTECH Building in Providence where attendees watched that evening’s WaterFire from an adjacent balcony.

The commitment for becoming a Big Sister is 6-8 hours per month for a minimum of one year.
