FAQs

What do you do with my donations?

When you donate clothing and other items to the Donation Center, we sort the materials and may distribute some items to our Littles and their families who are in need. We then sell the bulk of your donations to thrift stores, like Savers. Your donations provide stable revenue to fund Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Ocean State, its programs, and its mission—to serve children facing adversity in Rhode Island by matching them with Big Brother/Big Sister mentors.

How do I schedule a pickup?

How do I know when you will be picking up in my area?

We send out mailers in advance of a town-wide pickup, and we do make phone calls to residents with listed phone numbers. However you may schedule a personal pickup at your convenience by contacting us at 401-921-2434 or 1-877-7-CLOTHES (1.877.725.6843).

Where can I drop off my donation?

You can drop off your donation at any of the bin locations across the State or at our Donation Center at 1540 Pontiac Avenue, Cranston. Click here for directions.

What are the hours of operation for the Donation Center?

Our extended drop-off hours are Monday through Thursday 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. and Friday 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. We are closed on weekends.

What items do you accept?

The Donation Center accepts “gently used” items such as anything made of cloth (clothing for all ages and genders; and sheets, towels, curtains, blankets, etc.), books, toys, games, etc. Small appliances and electronics in good working order, such as blenders, mixers, radios, etc. are also accepted. Furniture donations require special, advance arrangements for pick up. Click here for a complete list of items we accept and do not accept.

What do I do with items you don’t accept?

For items we don’t accept such as electronics, TVs, large appliances and hazardous materials, please visit the Rhode Island Resource Recovery Corporation (RIRRC) website.
RIRRC offers free recycling of home computer equipment and cellular phones to Rhode Island residents. Residents can recycle computers, monitors, mouse pointers, hard drives, modems, scanners, laptops, printers, cellular phones and all other related equipment at Resource Recovery's facility in Johnston or at one of the scheduled satellite collections.

Do you pick up furniture?

The Donation Center’s primary focus is clothing and small household items.  Therefore, our trucks go out with just one person working on them, and we are not able to offer pickup for anything that would require two people to lift.   We do offer pick up of small furniture pieces.  Coffee tables, end tables, and rocking chairs are examples of the types of furniture pieces that we can pick up.   Please call 401.921.2434 to arrange for a pick up.

Our retail partner Savers accepts drop-off donations of larger furniture pieces (sofas, entertainment centers, bedroom or dining room sets) at their local store locations for those who might have the means to transport the larger furniture items themselves.   Savers will accept these items on behalf of Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Ocean State and provide you with one of our tax donation receipts.

How do I donate a vehicle?

For all car, truck or boat donations, please call 1.800.710.9145.

Can I donate cash?

Yes! Please visit our Financial Donation page to make a secure, online donation directly to the organization. Or, you may write a check payable to Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Ocean State and mail it to:

Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Ocean State
1540 Pontiac Avenue, Suite 1
Cranston, RI 02920

How should I pack my items?

All clothing should be placed in bags and labeled "Big Sisters" ("Big Brothers Big Sisters" in CT). Dishes and any other breakable items should be packed in boxes as if you were moving. Small miscellaneous household items should be packed in a box, sealed, and labeled. In bad weather, place items in a plastic garbage bag, then tie the bag, and label it.

Where should I put my donation?

Your donation should be placed outside in a visible place: e.g., front porch, front steps, side porch, sidewalk, driveway, by the garage, by the mailbox, in a lobby, or in a vestibule.

Will the driver come inside to pick up my donations?

No, our drivers are not permitted to enter homes. We ask that you bag or box your items, label them “for Big Sisters” and place them outside by 7:00 am for the driver to pick up.

What time will my items be picked up?

Your donation will be picked up sometime between 7:00 am and dusk. Because our drivers stop at more than 100 houses per day, we cannot tell you the specific time when we will pick up your donation. Please place your donations outside by 7:00 am, as you may be our first stop. Again, please label your bags/boxes so our drivers will take the correct bags.

What do I do if my donation was not picked up on the scheduled day?

We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused you. You may call the Donation Center at 401-921-2434 or 1-877-7-CLOTHES (1.877.725.6843) between the hours of 9 am and 5 pm. A Customer Service Representative will identify the problem and reschedule your pick-up as quickly as possible.

What if I did not receive a receipt?

We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused. Our drivers are not allowed to leave a receipt in your mailbox due to federal regulations. The drivers may place the receipt in a storm or screen door, affix it to the front mat, etc. In the event you cannot locate the receipt, please email us or call 401-921-2434 and a Customer Service Representative will be happy to assist you.

I know someone else who would like to make a donation. Can you go to their house too?

Absolutely! Please have them contact us directly to schedule a pickup that is convenient for them by calling 401-921-2434 or 1-877-7-CLOTHES (1.877.725.6843).
