Refer a Child FAQs
We accept referrals from teachers, grandparents, guidance counselors, neighbors and other concerned individuals. However enrollment in our program requires approval and participation by a child's parent or legal guardian. All parents must want their children to be in our program, and all children must want a mentor.
While the majority of children are from the greater Providence area, there are Littles in the program from all parts of Rhode Island.
Our Littles come from many types of home environments and family structures, different socio-economic levels, ethnic backgrounds, and neighborhoods and schools across all communities. Some of the children are overburdened with adult responsibilities, shy or withdrawn, or just not receiving enough individual attention from an adult who will listen. Their backgrounds and personalities are unique, but they all have a need for friendship with a caring adult.
Children can be between the ages of 7 and 15. Children may remain in the program until they turn 18 or graduate from high school.
Unfortunately, there is a waiting list at this time. However, we are always looking for new volunteers to join the program. Children referred to the program are put on the waiting list and matched with a Mentor as soon as possible.
Yes. All information you share with us is confidential. Once your request is received, a member of our staff will call you and help you determine if this is the right program for your child.
Each volunteer must undergo a thorough screening process that includes:
- Completion of a formal written application
- A criminal history record check
- At least three references
- An in-person interview
- A professional assessment of their appropriateness to volunteer with a child
- An orientation and training process that outlines the standards, policies, expectations, and roles of a mentor
No, our program is offered free of charge.
Parents and guardians are an integral part of the match at every step of the process. Not only will you provide information about your child’s strengths and needs, but you’ll also approve the selection of the Mentor.
Once the match is made, you will remain closely involved in several key ways:
- Approving match activities and supporting your child’s involvement
- Asking your child questions about the match meetings and reporting any concerns to the agency staff
- Reporting to the agency about your child’s progress and milestones in the match relationship (our staff will contact you regularly, but we welcome your feedback at any time)
- Participating in child safety training offered by our staff, and communicating with your child about the training she/he receives
